DAILY PIC: Cindy Sherman hit her stride as an artist amazingly early. Her trademark self-portrait photos – including this hand-painted series where she mimics orgasm – had already started to appear while she was in her junior year in art at Buffalo State college. A new catalog, published by Vienna’s Verbund collection, presents everything Sherman made between 1975 and 1977, when she moved to New York and began work on her “Untitled Film Stills”. (A slide show in the Daily Beast presents a selection of works from the book.) One issue I’m still not clear on: Just how much of Sherman’s art depends on the influence of Suzy Lake, the pioneering Canadian feminist who was working with self-portrayal before Sherman was. Lake had published very Shermanesque work by early 1974, well before Sherman discovered herself as her subject. On the other hand, the new catalog explains that the two didn’t meet until Lake showed up to give a talk in Buffalo in October 1975, after Sherman’s first self-portraits. Sherman has always acknowledged the contact, so maybe the whole issue of precedence is a dead letter. After all, it was Sherman who took the idea and pushed it deep into our culture.

I was shopping today and I found Kente print skirts at American Apparel. I’m on the fence when it comes to traditional prints being sold commercially.

On the one hand, exposing the world to these beautiful colours and textures can certainly lead to greater engagement and learning about the cultures which produce them. Whenever I wear the prints that I brought back from Ghana, I always do my best to talk about where they came from and what they mean with my friends. I’m also very careful about wearing them casually; I think I’ve worn my clothing from Ghana twice since I returned eight months ago.

On the other hand, the hipster girl who buys this skirt and wears it all summer probably doesn’t know that each of those squares has a different meaning (let alone what the meanings are). She also probably won’t know that the print she’s wearing is distinct from other kente prints because it was produced by a different tribe. She will be taking part in the commodification of a complex and rich culture about which she knows nothing. That’s the basis of cultural appropriation. Make no mistake: it’s a form of exploitation.

I don’t even know if I can comment on the designing of this skirt. I’m going to assume that it was created by an American (AA is all about sourcing stuff in the states, right?). If that assumption is correct, then this skirt is doubly exploitative, because it represents the use of someone else’s culture to produce money for North Americans. How screwed up is that?

This is why I can’t get too excited about seeing beautiful prints from African cultures in the mall in downtown Ottawa. Just because they’re pretty doesn’t mean you should forget about the people(s) who created and produced them.

Cultural appropriation, trivialization and profiteering by big Western clothing brands/firms is unstoppable, I think. Think about the Palestinian scarves, hipster culture, Native American accessories, Eskimo patterns….

I think the closest we will get to acknowledgement of West African fabrics or dutch wax-print is going to be the stupid terminology “tribal print”

This!!!! Ughh the disrespect…

It’s a thin line we walk when introducing culturally-specific treasures to Mainstream society (especially American Mainstream).

This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day: Their existence was widely reported last August, but the demand for pills made from dead human babies apparently hasn’t let up: South Korean customs officials revealed today that they have confiscated more than 17,000 of the pills from smugglers over the past nine months.

Hospitals and abortion clinics in China have continued to sell dead babies to medical companies that dry them out, grind them up, and sell them in pill form as alternative remedies to increase stamina. The dead babies are “mostly abortions or stillbirths” and are being used with the mothers’ consent.

Health authorities in Asia worry that if the powdered fetus trade continues, the capsules will find their way online, where the sick and gullible will be susceptible to super-bacteria and other harmful ingredients found in the human flesh capsules.

Follow-Up of the Day: Baby With The Bucket List Dies: Avery Canahuati, the baby with the bucket list, lost her battle with spinal muscular atrophy Monday afternoon. A letter on her blog, written in her voice, encourages her family, friends, and supporters to carry on the fight:

Dear Mommy & Daddy:

If you’re reading this it’s because I’ve gone to take care of my Uncle Bryant, Nana Carolyn, Papa George, and all my great Grandparents. I love you veeeeeeeeeery much. Also, tell Nana & G-Pa I love them too. In fact, tell everyone who loved me that I love them and I appreciate them caring about me.

When I started writing my blog, I thought I’d only be speaking to my closest friends and family members. Little did I know soooooooo many people would care about me and while I’m flattered to have so many people who love me, I hope they will also take time to love and care about all of my friends out there with SMA.

You see, I’d never heard of SMA prior to being diagnosed with it, yet there’s thousands of my friends out there living with it today and millions of my future friends parents who are unknowingly carriers of the SMA gene. Without awareness and without a cure, I’m afraid more of my friends are at risk to have their lives drastically shortened by SMA.

When people think of me, I hope they’ll also think of all my friends who have been through this and who are going through this now. But what I really hope for is that when people think about me, they will not waste time sitting there feeling sorry for me, rather I hope they will STAND UP in honor of me and all of my friends (past, present, and future). And they can do so by spreading awareness and helping to fund a cure for my friends.

To all my SMAns, you followed me, now please follow all of my friends.

Mommy. Daddy. I love you every bit as much as you love me. And while I’m not here physically, I will forever live in your minds, as you will mine.

Heartwarming Tearjerker of the Day: When Ronald Searle’s wife, Monica, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer in 1969, the illustrator drew her a Mrs. Mole drawing “to cheer every dreaded chemotherapy session and evoke the blissful future ahead.” Monica survived the then-experimental treatment, and died just last summer. Ronald died in January.

Now a collection of 47 Mrs. Mole drawings has been released as a book, Les Tres Riches Heures de Mrs Mole.

Said Ronald Searle:

“I drew them originally for no one’s eyes except Mo’s, so she would look at them propped up against her bedside lamp and think: ‘When I’m better, everything will be beautiful.’ … Everything about them had to be romantic and perfect.”

Never-Again-Land of the Day: In 2005, Michael Jackson declared he would never return to his beloved Neverland because he felt violated by the police searches that had taken place there after he was accused of child abuse. In 2008, the theme park and its attractions were dismantled and sold. But not before intrepid photographer Scott Haefner and his friend Jonathan Haebe hatched a plan to sneak inside and capture the abandoned grounds on camera “before it was too late.”

“I loved wandering around and photographing the rides at night,” Haefner says of the visit. “After visiting Neverland, I have a strong sense that Michael was innocent of the charges that were filed against him. I don’t have anything tangible to base my feelings on. I think he was just deeply misunderstood, unfortunately.”
